Body Mass Index (BMI)

The Body Mass Index or BMI, is the ratio of your weight and height (squared) which is considered to be a reasonable measure of a healthy, or otherwise, body weight.

In some respects, it is a rather “blunt” tool as it fails to take into account a number of variables that influence BMI and which might not be considered to be good markers of an unhealthy or healthy body weight.

For example, muscle mass is not taken into account when making the calculation and as muscle weighs more than fat, athletes could be classified as being “over weight” even with a very low body fat percentage.

Furthermore, a BMI calculation is unsuitable in the case of eating disorders which should always be addressed by suitably qualified professionals.

Whilst a BMI calculation is limited in absolute terms, it remains a useful tool as an indicator of morphological health.

How the BMI is calculated?

The BMI calculation divides an adult’s weight in kilograms (kg) by their height in metres (m) squared.

For example, if you weigh 70kg (around 11 stone) and are 1.73m (around 5 feet 8 inches) tall, you work out your BMI by:

  1. Squaring your height: 1.73 x 1.73 = 2.99
  2. Then, dividing 70 by 2.99 = 23.41

BMI results are normally reported to one decimal place and so in this case, the BMI would be 23.4 which is classified as a “healthy” weight.
